Growing up in the same Akron neighbourhood in Ohio as LeBron James, you can see why a pull-up is the favourite exercise of The Club’s new manager.
Tim Heath’s sense of curiosity and adventure sparked at the end of his high school years when, amongst other hobbies such as white-water rafting and jumping out of a plane, he chose to ride the first roller coaster ever built in the US over 200 feet called “Magnum”.
Tim studied an under graduate degree in Medical Anthropology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland that drew upon social, cultural, biological, and linguistic areas to better understand factors influencing health and wellbeing such as Ayurvedic medicine. He invested time in his basketball skills and began calisthenics; a creative workout for the body without equipment.
“People always ask why I got into the fitness industry. I wanted others to experience what I have felt when you take care of your body. Happy people want to make other people happy.”
On a path to become a family practitioner, Tim decided he “would rather help people stay out of hospital than help them once they were in hospital”. Tim continued his studies with a Masters in Public Health and explored how to communicate healthy behaviours.
A man who likes to listen to inspirational music while taking a shower and recommends everyone gets up from their chair at least once every hour, had his first taste of corporate wellness at a manufacturing company in 2004. Tim began as a lab technician and ended up in Human Resources to assist with the wellbeing of company employees.
WebMD is an American corporation known primarily as an online publisher of news and information pertaining to human health and wellbeing. Tim ventured to Indianapolis and become a telephonic health coach for WebMD, assisting people from janitors to executives, Walt Disney employees and ESPN staff on how to live better lives.
Global insurance company, Cigna, required an onsite health coordinator in Ohio and Tim fit the bill perfectly. With over 4300 employees, 1000 contractors and their dependents, he also didn’t sleep.
From Cigna to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base just east of Dayton in Ohio, Tim was on track to start a new role as a health coach analyst. However, the Government rescinded his contract just one week before he was due to start.
A pivotal moment in his life, Tim harnessed his passion for fitness on which to build his own business. Guided by the non-profit organisation and the nation's largest network of volunteer, expert business mentors, SCORE, Tim found the contacts and resources to launch a boot camp in the park in 2011. His first class welcomed 23 people and he never looked back. Tim studied military film and talked to friends in the military to replicate a similar style of boot camp workout that he could adapt to his park environment.
A move to Florida to continue his online coaching and transformational challenges meant closing his gym, but it wasn’t long before Norwalk Ohio, a town of 17,000 people, drew Tim back for family reasons. It was here that Tim starred as an extra in his first movie, Point Blank, with Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo. Fascinated by the behind-the-scenes, Tim began studying film, editing, special effects, lighting and sound and created his own short films.
About to move to Atlanta, the new Hollywood, Tim was contacted to coach a client he couldn’t refuse and this is where his door to the Cayman Islands opened. A few inspirational posts on social media caught the spotlight and prompted his initial introduction to The Club. “I kept thinking, is this job real? It’s a dream job.”
Meet Tim on your next visit to The Club. He is busy creating new workouts and programs for our members of which we hope to launch soon.
